Summary

At the height of the pandemic, 99-year-old WWII veteran Captain Tom Moore began walking laps of his garden to raise £1,000 for the NHS。 By the time of his 100th birthday, he'd reached £32 million and captured the hearts of the nation。 In his official autobiography, announced alongside the creation of the Captain Tom Foundation, he tells us not only of his long life, serving in Burma in the war and racing motorbikes, but also how an old soldier with a can-do, never-give-up attitude inspired a nation to believe anything is possible by reminding us it is never too late。

A very well written autobiography of a humble war hero。 You can't help but enjoy his infectious zest for life which was ended tragically by COVID。 A very well written autobiography of a humble war hero。 You can't help but enjoy his infectious zest for life which was ended tragically by COVID。 。。。more

Captain Tom, a name that I am sure everyone worldwide know his story, well the last year。But he led a full life, a busy life。 This is a door that opens to his life。The story of his childhood, love of bikes, motorbikes, fast cars, love of his uncles, the tragedies, the love, the family heart breaking health problems。We see people every day not knowing they remarkable life stories, we all have them。From fighting in Burma, India, to his very tough marriages to his love of his two daughter。But the s Captain Tom, a name that I am sure everyone worldwide know his story, well the last year。But he led a full life, a busy life。 This is a door that opens to his life。The story of his childhood, love of bikes, motorbikes, fast cars, love of his uncles, the tragedies, the love, the family heart breaking health problems。We see people every day not knowing they remarkable life stories, we all have them。From fighting in Burma, India, to his very tough marriages to his love of his two daughter。But the story comes alive when he talks about his determination to get back his fitness after a fall in his kitchen breaking his hip, fracturing his ribs, punctured lungs, skin cancer all at the age of 99 years old。A worldwide chaos with Covid and a man arriving at his 100th birthday that gave hope to millions of people hope, that tomorrow would be a good day。 News reports and stories that changed the news to a man walking in his garden, becoming a pop star, and raising millions for the NHS。Heart warming, touching and a story that shows how through a life we all have the NHS to thank after the last two years especially and Covid。In 2010 NHS saved my last at Jersey Hospital, so I am full of admiration for Captain Tom, sadly now the late Captain Tom who's last year of life must have left him filled with joy and happiness。The only one thing I ask is does an 100 years old remember so much including the full names of so many friends from 75 years ago? 。。。more

Inspiring readingI suppose Captain Tom could be considered an ordinary man, until you read his book。 Such a lovely story with all the ups and downs of his life。 It really gave a look in to life way back then right up to today。 I suspect he was an honourable man by all accounts。 What an exciting final chapter。

This reads like a Grandpa telling a story and I loved that。 He gets distracted in the middle of the story, tries to put life lessons where they don’t belong and touts back to the good old days maybe more than he should。 All those things I would normally hate in a novel but I found this so endearing and I always had a huge smile on my face while reading。

Captain Tom is best known for the wonderful campaign to raise funds for the NHS during the COVID pandemic but there is, of course, much more to the man's life than just that。 With a warm friendly tone the book tells us about a man born a century ago bringing to life the past as only someone who lived it can。 Tom Moore lived through some of the darkest days of the twentieth century serving his country during the second world war。 A war hero, a record raising fund raiser but still there’s much mor Captain Tom is best known for the wonderful campaign to raise funds for the NHS during the COVID pandemic but there is, of course, much more to the man's life than just that。 With a warm friendly tone the book tells us about a man born a century ago bringing to life the past as only someone who lived it can。 Tom Moore lived through some of the darkest days of the twentieth century serving his country during the second world war。 A war hero, a record raising fund raiser but still there’s much more to the man than that。 This is a man that lived his life trying to be the best he could be and do the right thing always。 It becomes apparent from the very beginning that he is an honest hard working person that wasn’t afraid to grab hold of life and see what it had to offer。 Something we should all aspire to do, I think。 I read this book over quite a long period, dipping in and out, and each time I came back to learn more it was like returning to an old friend。 An inspirational and modest man that gave his country something to be excited about during a difficult time。 A highly recommended read even if you know nothing of ‘Captain Tom’ beforehand。 。。。more

First half really slow with lots of details of things that are unrelatable to life now。 However the second half picked up pace very quickly and focused more on family life, everyday kindness and the pandemic。 This took me so long to read as long covid left me struggling to concentrate so a few pages at a time。 Well worth a read for an inspirational man!

This man is an absolute hero! honestly, this book should be taught in schools because there are very few men like this around anymore。 I have learnt so much from him and it is a reminder of how life should be lived。 With good old fashioned values, hard work, empathy for other people while having a positive attitude and not taking yourself too seriously。When Captain Tom came to the attention of the British people, we were not in a very good way as a country。 There were lots of political problems, This man is an absolute hero! honestly, this book should be taught in schools because there are very few men like this around anymore。 I have learnt so much from him and it is a reminder of how life should be lived。 With good old fashioned values, hard work, empathy for other people while having a positive attitude and not taking yourself too seriously。When Captain Tom came to the attention of the British people, we were not in a very good way as a country。 There were lots of political problems, 1,000 people a day were dying of COVID-19, there was lots of weird stuff going on like COVID deniers and really, people were feeling hopeless。 But Tom managed to bring the nation together, not just with his charity raising effort but also with his positive and humble attitude that everyone needed at that time。 When I started reading his book, I was looking forward to reading about his childhood, time in the war and how he has kept himself so positive and healthy throughout his life。 What I didn't expect to hear was that he had a tough life, there was mental illness in his loved ones, financial difficulties & a major accident that nearly killed him in 2018! It just makes his life even more impressive and he will go on inspiring me after reading this book, even though he sadly passed a few months ago。 Very well written book and a reminder that tomorrow will be a good day if you make it a good day。 。。。more

I received this book as a Christmas present and reading it was a surprise。 Captain Tom's life was wondrous, tragic, heartbreaking, terrifying, joyful, beautiful; all of these things and more。 The WWII sections were described with incredible Hemingwayesque storytelling which left me gripped。 You really don't think about how fascinating a person's life can be until you pick up a book like this。 I received this book as a Christmas present and reading it was a surprise。 Captain Tom's life was wondrous, tragic, heartbreaking, terrifying, joyful, beautiful; all of these things and more。 The WWII sections were described with incredible Hemingwayesque storytelling which left me gripped。 You really don't think about how fascinating a person's life can be until you pick up a book like this。 。。。more

Everyone knows about Captain Sir Tom Moore, even people who don’t live in the UK。 Once he was an ordinary man who became a decorated officer in the war and who went on to work in Civvy Street, marry and create a family of his own。 But nearing his 100th birthday he became an overnight celebrity once news hounds heard about his courageous ‘Walk for the NHS’ ambition of walking 100 laps of his garden before his impending 100th birthday。Despite his frailty he managed to achieve this target, slowly a Everyone knows about Captain Sir Tom Moore, even people who don’t live in the UK。 Once he was an ordinary man who became a decorated officer in the war and who went on to work in Civvy Street, marry and create a family of his own。 But nearing his 100th birthday he became an overnight celebrity once news hounds heard about his courageous ‘Walk for the NHS’ ambition of walking 100 laps of his garden before his impending 100th birthday。Despite his frailty he managed to achieve this target, slowly and steadily, using his walker to help him。 Then, to his great amazement and delight it was found that he raised around £38,000,000 for the NHS。 This is when he became an overnight sensation and celebrity。 He deserved the accolade。 He had been weakened with illness, but this did not stop him。 He enjoyed a flyover of ancient aircraft on his birthday and was even knighted by the Queen in a special ceremony to honour his amazing achievement。His memoir ‘Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day’ was released in September 2020, the year that Covid19 spread through our country like a plague of locusts。 Indeed his famous achievement was attempted during the first mighty Lockdown。 The autobiography became The Sunday Times No 1 Bestseller and one of the top Christmas gifts of the year。 Like many people, I wanted to find out more about Captain Sir Tom Moore and what he was like in his younger days and especially how he came to inspire a whole nation with his bravery and determination。 He also inspired a song, a remake of ‘You'll Never Walk Alone’ sung by Michael Ball。 He inspired a T shirt and other merchandise, like cushions and shirts; such was his popularity that others wanted to share in。I enjoyed his story and looking at his photographs。 He was 30 years older than me, actually about the age of my parents, now both sadly passed away。 My father was in the war。 He had an album of photographs of his times in India, just like Tom Moore and I had often looked at it。 He was in the RAF and continued to work for Queen and country after the war。 Tom’s life felt similar to my family history, a century of a life, just like Tom’s。 He talked about the times I have lived through。 He invoked lots of memories。 He was no ordinary man。 He was humble, caring and determined to make a good life for himself。 He deserved what he achieved and the shame about his story is that his life was taken by Covid19, after only another one year after the walk that inspires us all。 。。。more
